The Maven Gypsy Bed & Breakfast and Cottages is an excellent base camp for exploring all Cape Breton Island has to offer.  We are the last stop before Cape Smokey and a skip and a jump from the Highlands National Park.

The Maven Gypsy is located at Wreck Cove. It is three minutes from a cobble beach on the Cabot Trail. The Maven Gypsy property consists of a main house with four guest rooms overlooking the sea and four cottages which are nestled at the base of a mountain behind the house. From the house guests can watch the ferry sail to Newfoundland and the lobster fishers set and pull their traps. Various restaurants can be found within 9 km from the property.

The Main House
The Maven Gypsy has been welcoming guests since May 2003. It offers four quaint rooms each of which has a private bathroom. We offer a variety of breakfast options, fresh baked goods and home cooked food. Our chickens may very well greet you upon your arrival! Room descriptions further down the page.

The Maven Gypsy Cottages each include a fully equipped kitchenette – pots, pans, and cutlery too! They are 200 m from the beach. Each boasts a view of the surrounding hills from their decks. Guests are invited to use the picnic table available for each cottage. Cottage descriptions further down the page.

The cottages provides parking at no additional cost. Small pets on request at time of booking (cleaning fee applies).  Free toiletries stock the bathroom.

In July and August cottages must be booked for a 2 day minimum.

Room Descriptions:

Green Room: located on the second floor of the farmhouse at its northeast corner this room boasts an obstructed view of the ocean. It has a queen bed as well as a twin bed in a private alcove which is separated by a half wall. The room has three windows as well a window in the bathroom. In addition to its private 3 piece ensuite it has a small desk area overlooking the side yard and chicken coop. Antique furnishings and colorful quilts will take you back in time. It is one of our biggest rooms – perfect for a mother-in-law, teenager or child.

Cute Room: tucked at the end of the hall and also found on the second floor is our coziest room tucked with two twin beds. It too has a view of the ocean. It has the feel of an attic hideaway. A private bathroom with tub, shower, toilet and sink is a five steps away in the hall. It is our largest bathroom added only three years ago.

Yellow Room: the third of three bedrooms on the second or top floor of this grand old house, this room features a private three piece bathroom with a window overlooking the woods in the back of the house, a window overlooking the ocean as well as two windows which frame the forest and old gambrel barn where once the traveling doctors and their horses found respite for the night. It too has a queen bed. A big cozy armchair and foot rest provide a relaxing retreat after a busy day of touring the Cabot Trail. This is our largest room.

Quilt Room: on the main floor of the house on the northeast the Quilt Room overlooks the ocean through an old fashioned bay window. View on three sides! A queen bed welcomes you as you step into it. The private bathroom is spacious and bright with daylight. It is also very spacious.

Cottage 1: our first cottage as you drive up Sawmill Road on the property behind the house into the Glades. Two people will find it cozy and comfortable as it has a queen bed, a love seat, dinette, and kitchen. A window peaking into the woods towards the ocean adds to its ‘get away’ feeling. Morning sunlight streams through its east facing window while a window on the south keeps the cooling breezes flowing.

Cottage 2: this cottage is made for three people with a double bed and a twin bed. Also offering a woods view it is located 200 meters from the main house. It has a bathroom, dinette and kitchen with windows on all sides.

Cottage 3: identical to cottage 1 but a little more removed from the main house with trees on three sides making it a perfect place to find privacy and peace. Windows make it bright and airy.

Cottage 4: offering the largest bathroom and shower and located at the end of the driveway about 300 meters from the house this cottage sleeps three people with a daybed tucked into an alcove. It is equipped with the same amenities as all the other cottages. Windows in the bedroom areas kitchen and dinette area frame the woods.
